Kuwait Airways Company is the flag carrier airline of Kuwait. It is headquartered in the Farwaniyah Governorate. The airline operates scheduled services to destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe from its main base at Kuwait International Airport.
The airline was established as a private company in 1953. It commenced operations on 1 April 1954, using two Douglas DC-3 aircraft leased from Lebanese International Airlines. In 1963, the airline became a public company as a result of the merger of two private airlines, Al-Naser Airlines and Arabian Airways. In 1984, the airline was privatized. On 25 May 2007, the airline announced that it would be rebranded as "KAC" (Kuwait Airways Corporation) following a decision by the Kuwaiti government to change the name of the state-owned company to match that of the national carrier.
The airline has been banned from flying over Iraqi airspace since Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The ban has been progressively lifted since 2003, with flights resuming to Baghdad in October 2008.
In March 2015, Kuwait Airways announced it would suspend all flights to Cairo indefinitely due to security concerns. The suspension came shortly after Egypt's downing of a Russian passenger jet that had taken off from Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. On 12 April 2016, Kuwait Airways announced it would resume flights to Cairo after Egypt lifted the flight ban.
Since its inception, Kuwait Airways has been one of the region's leading airlines, serving 43 destinations in 29 countries as of September 2016. The airline has a fleet of 29 aircraft comprising Airbus A320s, A330s and Boeing 777s
