Thai Airways is a national airline of Thailand, headquartered in Bangkok. The airline was founded in 1988 as a joint venture between Thai and Scandinavian Airlines. Thai Airways commenced operations in December 1988 with a flight from Bangkok to Singapore. The airline's first aircraft, an Airbus A300B4, was delivered in March 1989.
Thai Airways operated its first flight to London in September 1989, and commenced services to other European destinations the following year. The airline's first Boeing 747-400 was delivered in November 1990. In 1992, Thai Airways became the launch customer for the Airbus A340-500. The airline's fleet of Airbus aircraft grew rapidly and by 1997 it had become the world's largest operator of the type.
Thai Airways operates scheduled passenger services to destinations in Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and Australasia. The airline has codeshare agreements with a number of airlines, including British Airways, Qantas and Singapore Airlines. Thai Airways is a member of the Star Alliance network.
